Information Fluency Instruction Program

Formal Assessment

Cal Maritime's limited enrollment size and curriculum structure provide a unique opportunity to provide effective, uniform information fluency instruction to all students. To meet this goal, strong assessment practices are essential.

The Association of College and Research Libraries Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education are used as a benchmark for all of our internal assessment practices.

Currently, our Information Fluency Program uses the following methods of program assessment:

  • Curriculum mapping to determine when and where students receive instruction addressing ACRL IL standards and their corresponding learning outcomes
  • Annual pre/post surveys designed to gauge the information fluency skills of freshmen in LIB100
  • Rubric-based assessment of samples of upper division student work
