Developing a Research Question

Search Tips

Keywords

When you type a word into OneSearch or Google to find information, the words you search with are called 'keywords'. Think of it this way: keywords are the key to unlocking the information you need.

Keyword tips

Here are some tips to remember when you try a search.

Don't write out your whole question or topic when you search! You need to pick keywords to use as search terms. Think strategically about which words are essential to express your question or topic

  • Example whole question: What actions would be most effective to insulate the cruise industry from the effects of a future pandemic
  • Example keywords (just the most important words!): actions, insulate, cruise industry, effects, future, pandemic

Synonyms and similar words

You don't have to use the exact words in your research question as you search. Trying synonyms, which mean the same as your original words, or similar words, can be really useful when trying to find the right keywords for your search. Use OR between synonyms or similar words when you search, or just try your search multiple times with different words.

Keep trying!

Play around with different combinations of your keywords, their synonyms and similar words. The only way to find out what will work to find useful information, is to actually do a few searches.
