native american heritage month

November is National American Indian Heritage Month in the United States. To celebrate, the Library will highlight some of the movies and books in our collection that spotlight the experience of Native American communities, both historical and current. Come check them out!

The Library of Congress-hosted website for Native American Heritage Month has information about events and information "paying tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans."

As we welcome you to the Cal Maritime Library, we acknowledge that we are on the traditional ancestral and historical lands of the Karkin Ohlone people. As guests on this land, we honor the original indigenous people, past, present, and future, for their centuries of stewardship and continued resilience. We commit to be good guests as we live, work, learn and play on this land. To learn more about the indigenous tribes of other areas, we encourage you to visit: https://native-land.ca

The Library is currently having trouble with the EXProxy server which gives us off-campus access to full text of electronic resources, such as articles and e-books. If you're trying to access the full text of an article or book and get a message that the server can't be found, such as the one below, you're encountering the EZProxy problem. We're working to get the problem fixed as soon as possible. Meanwhile, it may be worth it to try again - the problems seem to happen off and on. Feel free to ask us in the library if you'd like us to send a PDF of the resource, or have any questions! Sorry for the inconvenience.

In an unrelated issue, EBSCO, one of our database providers, is asking you to log in when you normally don't have to. Here's how to log in until the problem is fixed. If you see a message that EBSCO is unable to validate your credentials, like the one below, select "Access through your institution."

Then, type "Cal Maritime" in the search box under "Let's find your institution." Cal Maritime should be the first search result; select it and you should be able to access the EBSCO databases.

library student advisory councilShare your perspective! The Library is currently recruiting a variety of students from across the Cal Maritime community for the Library Student Advisory Council (LSAC). The Council was first formed in Fall 2019, and we're restarting it now that we're all back on campus again.

Students on the Council would provide input to the Library on policies and services that affect students, offer student perspectives on Library issues, and gather input from other Cal Maritime students. LSAC will meet 4-6 times during the course of the 2021-22 academic year, and we will do our best to accommodate everyone's schedules for meeting times. Meetings will take place roughly once a month for an hour at a time.

This year we’d like to focus on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. How can we make the Library a welcoming place for everyone in the Cal Maritime community?

Are you interested, or do you know any students who might be interested in this role? If so, please contact Margot Hanson at mhanson@csum.edu with recommendations.
