For Faculty

A guide to library services that support faculty at Cal Maritime

Library Support for Your Teaching

Liaison librarians can partner with faculty to support student learning by:

  • Visiting your class to guide students. Faculty librarians provide interactive, hands-on instruction on research strategy, database navigation, website evaluation, source citation, and otherwise finding and using library and open web resources appropriate to your assignment.
  • Creating online course guides with a customized, discipline-specific set of resources tailored to your assignments.
  • Reviewing your assignment and suggesting appropriate ways to develop information fluency outcomes, incorporate library research, guide students in the use of library and open web resources, and assess how well our resources will fit your assignment

Librarians are also available to consult with students one-on-one. Please encourage students to stop by the Ask a Librarian desk during our drop-in hours, or to make an appointment with us!

Information Literacy Canvas Modules

The Library offers information literacy instruction modules that you can add to your Canvas courses. The specific modules available are listed below. You can access the modules in two ways:

  • Add your liaison librarian to your Canvas class and ask them to copy the modules into your course.
  • Go to Canvas Commons using the link in the far left navigation within Canvas, and then search for Cal Maritime, or use the links to individual modules below (you will need to log in to Canvas).

Please review the information for faculty in the module and follow any instructions. You will need to add due dates to any graded elements of the modules that you wish to use.

The APA and MLA citation modules contain short lessons, two formative quizzes students can retake until they achieve the level needed to continue through the module, and a final summative quiz.

Other Teaching Support

The Library also supports teaching and learning by making course materials available to students though our course reserves collection, providing copyright guidance, and through the Affordable Learning Solutions program.
