There have been some changes to how long you can check out textbooks, equipment, and other popular items, and the fines that get charged if you return them late.

  • Two-hour textbooks now check out for 2 hours + overnight. If you check out a textbook in the last two hours the library is open, it's due during the first hour the next time the Library is open.
  • Some textbooks and maritime materials that used to have either 2-hour or 3-day loans now have 7-day loans. They are located on the short "reference" shelves, on the side near the offices on the left of the library as you walk in. Seven-day loans are renewable an unlimited number of times, unless someone else puts a hold on the item (how to renew online).
  • iPads now check out for the semester.
  • Dell laptops now check out for 4 hours + overnight. If you check out a laptop in the last four hours the library is open, it's due during the first hour the next time the Library is open.
  • Most other equipment, such as calculators and charting tools, now checks out overnight as well.
  • Fines for hourly loans such as 2-hour textbooks and 4-hour laptops are $1/hour. Fines for 7-day items are $1/day. You will only be charged if you go over $15 in a semester.
  • Books can be returned to the drop box, but laptops should be returned to a human being during library open hours.

library student advisory councilShare your perspective! The Library is currently recruiting a variety of students from across the Cal Maritime community for the Library Student Advisory Council (LSAC). The Council was first formed in Fall 2019, and we're restarting it now that we're all back on campus again.

Students on the Council would provide input to the Library on policies and services that affect students, offer student perspectives on Library issues, and gather input from other Cal Maritime students. LSAC will meet 4-6 times during the course of the 2021-22 academic year, and we will do our best to accommodate everyone's schedules for meeting times. Meetings will take place roughly once a month for an hour at a time.

This year we’d like to focus on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. How can we make the Library a welcoming place for everyone in the Cal Maritime community?

Are you interested, or do you know any students who might be interested in this role? If so, please contact Margot Hanson at mhanson@csum.edu with recommendations.

For the Spring 2021 semester, the Cal Maritime Library will lend wifi hotspots and laptops to off-campus students who lack the technology needed to successfully complete coursework. We anticipate distributing technology in early January 2021, with the tech due back to the Library at the end of the spring semester in April 2021.

Available technology is limited. Please help us help the students most in need by applying only if necessary, and only if you will be living off-campus in the spring. This application is not a reservation and does not guarantee you will receive the requested technology.

To request a tech loan, submit an application by Wednesday, Nov. 18. Notifications will be made to students on Nov. 24. Applications will continue to be accepted after these dates. Applications are being reviewed by the Dean of the Library, the EOP Coordinator, and the Lead Residence Life Coordinator.

Contact Library Dean Michele Van Hoeck (mvanhoeck@csum.edu) with questions or concerns.
