Why search for standards and codes?

  • To establish any constraints on your design process, legal or otherwise
  • To be aware of new or imminent legal constraints

What are engineering standards and codes?

Standard: a set of technical definitions and guidelines, "how to" instructions for designers, manufacturers, and users. Standards promote safety, reliability, productivity, and efficiency in industries that rely on engineered components and equipment.

Code: a standard adopted by one or more governmental bodies, having the force of law.

  • The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) contains federal regulations, published annually.
  • The daily Federal Register contains proposed new regulations not yet in the CFR.
