Library Policies

The policies of the California Maritime Academy Library

Library Services During COVID-19

  • During Fall 2020, outside pickup of library materials is available 0800-1700, M-F. Email to request pickup.
  • Off campus? Enter your home address when placing a hold on a book so it can be mailed to you. Return envelope provided.
  • Make an appointment to return or pick up library materials using our online booking.
  • Although the library's doors are closed, library staff continue to work remotely during regular business hours, M-F.
  • Cal Maritime equipment now checks out for 7 days and is sanitized upon return.
  • Course reserves check out for 24 hours.
  • CSU+ and ILL are available.
  • Availability of all library materials may be affected by the need to quarantine them for safety.

Borrowing Overview

Library materials can be borrowed from the books collection, reserve collection, media collection, and equipment collection by current students, faculty, and staff of Cal Maritime. Check out items at the Help Desk in the Cal Maritime Library.

Books and Audiobooks

Materials covered by this policy include: books, audiobooks, oversize/folio items, best sellers, and graphic novels.

You may renew books in person, through the library website, or by phone (707) 654-1090. Items may not be renewed if requested by another library user.

The Library does not charge overdue fines for books and audiobooks. Materials more than 60 days past due will be considered lost and a replacement fee will be charged. All charges go to Accounting at the end of the month.

Reserve Collection

Print materials on RESERVE are loaned for 2 hours with no renewals. Print RESERVE materials must be used in the Library ONLY.

Media materials are loaned for 4 hours with no renewals. Media may be used outside the library.

Selected print reserve materials are loaned for 3 days with no renewals. There is a 2 item limit for these items.

Materials covered by this policy include: DVDs, Blu-Rays, Games & Puzzles.

Equipment

Laptops & iPads are available for a 4 hour loan with no renewals. Devices must be returned to library Help Desk by half hour before closing. There are NO OVERNIGHT LOANS of laptops or iPads.

Headphones and computer mice are available for a 4 hour loan.

GoPro cameras, tripods, and camera mounts are available for a 5 day loan with no renewals.

360 degree Spherical panorama cameras are available for a 5 day loan with no renewals.

Binoculars and Laser Presenters are available for a 5 day loan with no renewals.

Kindle Fire and Nook e-Readers are loaned for a semester (students) or academic year (faculty/staff). The e-Readers are preloaded with a selection of e-books. Patrons may request a title to be acquired and loaded onto a device. Any materials loaded by borrowers onto eReaders will be deleted on return.

Portable Blu-Ray  and DVD players are loaned for 1 week with no renewals.

Calculators, rulers, compasses, colored pencils, and dry erase markers are available for a 4 hour loan.

All borrowers are responsible for damaged and lost devices or parts. Any damage to the equipment will be noted on the borrower's record and billed accordingly. The replacement charge for lost equipment varies and can be found on the Equipment Guide.

All equipment may be used outside the Library.

All equipment should be returned at the Library Help Desk, not via the Book Drop.

Interlibrary Loan

Physical items, such as books, DVDs, or CDs, not found at the Cal Maritime Library may be requested through CSU+.

All Cal Maritime patrons, whether students, staff, or faculty, have the same CSU+ borrowing terms. They are:

CSU+ book or media or any other Interlibrary Loan material more than 14 days overdue will be considered lost and charged the Replacement Fee. All charges go to Accounting at the end of the month.

Duration of loan and renewal policies for materials outside on CSU+ are determined by the lending institution.

Replacement Fees

Once a borrower has accrued fees of $25 or more, borrowing privileges will be suspended. For students, a hold will be placed on their academic records until overdue items are returned or fees are paid.

The replacement charge for lost materials (books, AV, etc.) is $115.00 minimum. The replacement charge for lost equipment varies and can be found on the Equipment Guide. All Cal Maritime students, faculty and staff are responsible for replacement costs of lost or damaged materials or equipment.

With prior approval of library staff, a borrower may replace lost or damaged material with an exact copy paid for at their expense.
