Ian Ogilvie: Laying the Foundation for US Maritime Strategy in South East Asia

Abstract

Political and strategic thinkers throughout the 20th century asserted this, the 21st century would be the century of Asia and that the fate of nations would rest on their ability to manipulate strategic and economic interests in the region. Despite this foresight only recently has a realignment of US interests toward Asia began. Thus, it is critical to get an understanding of the current state of things as they have been unfolding in the crucial crossroads of the strategic maritime environment in Southeast Asia particularly with the actions of the rising Peoples Republic of China and the US overriding strategic interest in all actors influencing the critical Straits of Malacca through which much of the worlds trade currently passes.
